It’s update time again. Our latest update includes a number of small bugfixes to streamline operations. Yet we’ve also added a number of features, such as an IVR destination which allows you to access different kind of services such as voicemail, do-not-disturb, call forwarding and more. For our British friends, we’ve also included a UK English voice pack should they prefer not to use the default one. You can read the full changelog and download the update here.

The 27 telecom regulators in the European Union, today announced they want harmonised rules for Voice over IP communications within the union. Until now, this is not the case and every country can impose rules on what is and what isn’t allowed for voice communications. This has made it increasingly difficult for VoIP startups who want to offer service in multiple European countries. Some countries allow the nomadic use of VoIP numbers, while some don’t, others won’t even allow you to sell a VoIP service without proof that your customer is a EU resident.

Fellow blogger Andy Abramson has been covering SightSpeed a lot lately. SightSpeed offers a software based approach to video conferencing, much like Skype does for voice calling. The big difference is, that Skype is active in a consumer market, while SightSpeed mainly serves the business market. Seeing that most companies still prefer fixed handsets on their desks, they apparently aren’t so picky when it comes to video.

If you’re in the Boston area you might want to consider visiting Digium Asterisk World on 30 & 31 October. The first edition of this event is colocated with Fall VON and that should provide you with enough incentive to pay them a visit. With recent news of Digium’s Switchvox acquisition and the deal with 3Com, there should be some interesting news to gather at this expo.

BT does it again and they’re well on their way now to win our “Smartest Incumbent Operator” award, assuming there is such at thing at all. They earned our respect a while ago, by releasing a non-biased VoIP guide for businesses. Now they announced a partnership with guerilla WiFi network provider Fon.
