On June, 5th last year we introduced Sipcat 1.2. Back then, we first introduced multi-language support, video support, provisioning for Polycom phones, a speedier interface and much much more. 5 Updates later, we’re ready to introduce Sipcat 1.3 to you. And as with the previous major release, we’ve included tons of new features.

Polycom introduces new IP conference phones

The Polycom SoundStation IP 4000 has been the company’s only IP-based conference phone for a long time. While Polycom’s traditional conference phone lineup includes many different models sporting wireless, bluetooth and skype support; the IP based lineup consisted of one device. That’s about to change as Polycom recently introduced the SoundStation IP 6000 and IP 7000 models.

Wireless VoIP phone roundup

One of the key devices with traditional telephony is a wireless handset, both in residential as in business use. When it comes to VoIP telephony, cordless telephones are nowhere near as standardized as their analog counterparts. One of the reasons for this, is the standard used for wireless VoIP telephony, or the lack thereof. While it would obviously make sense to opt for WiFi as the cordless VoIP standard, the technology has its issues when it comes to real-time communication.

Aastra acquires Ericsson’s PBX business

Ericsson has sold its enterprise PBX business to Aastra for $102.7 million. Ericsson wants to focus on carriers and service providers. Although the company has said that they will continue to sell enterprise solutions, but only through their carriers and service-provider partners. The deal includes a transfer of some 600 of Ericsson’s employees.

Sipcat 1.2.5 update available

Wow, nearly 3 months went by since we released our last update. As you can tell by its size (a whopping 120MB) it’s a big one. Aside from the usual bugfixes and small improvements, this update features support for Snom’s new wireless handset m3. While Sipcat is generally used with ISDN lines, our analog using customers can now do routing on a per port basis, instead of per card. We’ve also included a DynDns client for people installing Sipcat on a dynamic IP address and we’ve updated the Asterisk core.

The InfoWorld Test Center tests, reviews and identifies the best and most innovative IT products every year. This award represents a major achievement for Open Source in general and Digium and Mark Spencer in particular

Lotus teams up with Cisco & Nortel

The partnership announcements haven’t exactly come to a stop. After recent announcements by Dell and Lenovo, Lotus is lining up to announce its partnership with both Cisco Systems and Nortel Networks. The deals focus on the integration of the Lotus Sametime platform into both Cisco’s and Nortel’s unified communications platforms.

Lenovo and Avaya teaming up

Just yesterday, I reported on Dell and Fonality teaming up to offer VoIP solutions to small businesses. Today, I ran across an article announcing a partnership between PC manufacturer Lenovo and Avaya. While this partnership is not half as interesting as the Dell/Fonality deal, it looks like a sign for things to come in 2008.

Wow, this is an impressive partnership announcement, Dell has picked Fonality as a partner to offer VoIP solutions to small businesses. It comes as a bit of surprise that Dell didn’t go for one of the traditional established vendors, but instead went for a company that offers Asterisk based solutions.
