Asterisk is the best IP PBX of 2008

Sipcat VoIP Blog - AsteriskAsterisk, the driving force behind our very Sipcat, has been selected by InfoWorld as the best IP PBX in 2008. The InfoWorld Test Center tests, reviews and identifies the best and most innovative IT products every year. This award represents a major achievement for Open Source in general and Digium and Mark Spencer in particular

InfoWorld reports, “a complete IP PBX released as open source under the GNU Public License, Asterisk is built to run on commodity hardware, providing considerable cost savings when compared with commercial alternatives, and it leverages the open source community for additional testing, bug fixes, and feature development.”

I’m curious to know what other major manufacturers of proprietary IP PBX systems think of this. Sure, they won’t lose any sleep over this, but I bet it doesn’t make them too happy either. Will we see manufacturers such as Cisco and Avaya start opening up in order not to lose market share to Open Source equivalents in the coming years?
