VoIP over 3G networks
While it is already possible on some handsets, VoIP over 3G networks doesn’t make sense economically in most countries. Even where flat rate data plans are available, they usually contain some kind of fair use policy, which will allow the operator to disconnect you from the service at any time. Yet VoIP on mobile handsets is ever increasing in popularity both in the consumer as in the business marketspace.
A recent research report from Disruptive Analysis claims that by 2012 3G VoIP usage will beat WiFi with around 250 million VoIP users on 3G and only 100 million using WiFi. While the numbers seem incredible it makes sense technologically, 3G networks can scale much larger than the scattered WiFi infrastructure with rather poor coverage.
Interesting point to note, while today there all already a few players offering VoIP over 3G using SIP ready handsets and extra software, the report mainly covers operator usage of VoIP by operators. “The key thing to think about is that for many users, VoIP will be invisible.” says Dean Bubley of Disruptive Analysis.
