Microsoft Response Point lets down.
According recent reports Microsoft’s new small business VoIP solution fails to impress. Response Point is a VoIP platform for businesses with 100 employees or less. It provides support for VoIP and traditional phone lines and has a voice activated web interface. Microsoft will be selling the solution through three hardware vendors: D-Link, Uniden and Quanta.
But according to partners who recently tested Response Point’s Beta 2, the solution is lacking in the feature department. There is no T1 support, which leaves only plain old analog lines and no room for growth. This may be OK for a 25 user company, but it’s doubtful that a 100 user company will get by with just a couple of analog lines.
Another gripe according to the beta testers is that Microsoft did not include support for remote extensions. This feature would allow employees to connect their phone from out of the office over the internet and is a very popular feature in many other VoIP solutions. It is doubtful that Microsoft will address these issues before the launch scheduled later this year, even though this is a pet project of Microsoft Chairman Gates himself.
