Europe leading VoIP adoption
The gap between Europe and US VoIP adoption continues to grow according a recent report from research firm In-Stat. While the total number of VoIP users in Europe amounted to 19 million in 2006, only about 10.6 million Americans were using the technology in the USA. The adoption in the EU is expected to double in 2007 to 34 million, the US is only expected to grow 50% to 15.9 million by the end of 2007.
The lower price of traditional phone calls in the USA is cited as one of the reasons of slower US adoption, together with the fact that Americans generally make less international calls than Europeans. “Where the value proposition for VoIP is simply cost savings, you are never going to see the kind of adoption rates in North America that you see in Europe,” according to Zeus Kerravala an analyst with Yankee Group.
This of course only refers to the adoption of internet telephony services such as the troubled Vonage and in the mean time bankrupt Sun Rocket. The adoption of VoIP as a technology solution in businesses is not included in this report.
