BBC talks to Niklas Zennström
“In the first of a new BBC series in which the world’s leading thinkers outline their personal vision of where technology could be leading us, the co-founder of net telephony service Skype, Niklas Zennström explains how the collaborative aspect of the internet will shape the technologies of the future.”
I’m no fan of Skype, but what Zennström and Friis have realized with Skype in such a short period of time is remarkable. As Andy Abramson points out, Skype continues to lose relevance as others adopt Skype’s ideas in a more open platform, such as the Gizmo Project.
The two are probably not too worried about it, they made a $2.6 billion deal (half of which in cash) when they sold their company to Ebay in 2005. Soon, they will be opening the doors to their latest project Joost, which offers broadband TV based on the same peer-to-peer technology used by Skype and Kazaa.
