Telepresence or videoconferencing?
This week the Telepresence World conference will be held at the University of San Diego in California. You may be wondering what telepresence is and you wouldn’t be the only one. According to Wikipedia “Telepresence refers to a set of technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect, at a location other than their true location.” It is supposed to “create a live, face-to-face meeting experience with remote participants life-size with fluid motion, accurate flesh-tones and flawless audio” according to Telepresence World. I would call it videoconferencing 2.0, for those on a somewhat larger budget.
Looking a bit further in the future, let’s say 2020, there’s an even more interesting technology ahead dubbed Claytronics by the Carnegie Mellon University. “This is an emerging field of engineering concerning reconfigurable nanoscale robots (‘claytronic atoms’, or catoms) designed to form much larger scale machines or mechanisms.” according to Wikipedia. Basically it will allow you to “teleport” yourself to the conference room where you need to be. Practical no doubt, but only for the fortunate few.
If you’re looking for a more affordable solution today, Sipcat 1.2 will feature full video support with both hardware IP telephones and softphones. And although technically Sipcat 1.2 isn’t available yet today, we promise to not make you wait as long for it and we won’t charge you extra for it either.
