EU taking position in VoIP
Thursday, October 25th, 2007
The 27 telecom regulators in the European Union, today announced they want harmonised rules for Voice over IP communications within the union. Until now, this is not the case and every country can impose rules on what is and what isn’t allowed for voice communications. This has made it increasingly difficult for VoIP startups who want to offer service in multiple European countries. Some countries allow the nomadic use of VoIP numbers, while some don’t, others won’t even allow you to sell a VoIP service without proof that your customer is a EU resident.
If you’re in the Boston area you might want to consider visiting Digium Asterisk World on 30 & 31 October. The first edition of this event is colocated with Fall VON and that should provide you with enough incentive to pay them a visit. With recent news of Digium’s Switchvox acquisition and the deal with 3Com, there should be some interesting news to gather at this expo.

I was a little late on blogging Digium’s Switchvox acquisition, but there isn’t much to tell about either. It’s a move that was (over)due, seeing that Digium’s main revenue comes from selling PCI cards and maybe the Asterisk business edition. Other vendors such as Fonality are making big profits of Digium’s work and Digium is getting none of it. Sure Digium has AsteriskNOW, but face it, that’s a joke and there are far better interfaces out there.
